Match Report: Glasgow Herald (Courtesy Steve Bell, who also supplied the Motherwell team information)

Leeds United scored the first victory of their Scottish tour in emphatic fashion last night at Fir Park. Motherwell had George Best guesting for them, but he failed to inspire Jock Wallace's men. Best showed few glimpses of his former play and was replaced after seventy-two minutes by striker Bruce Clelland. Leeds opened strongly, but Frank Worthington fired well over the bar from twenty-five yards. Best had his first touch when he lined up to take a free-kick on the edge of the box, but it was a poor effort, going direct to a Leeds defender. Kenny Burns moved up front but he blasted the ball over from eight yards. Leeds opened the scoring after fourteen minutes, when a Thomas flick was headed out of Sproat's reach by Worthington. Motherwell were making few scoring chances and Sproat made a fine diving save when he got down to hold a Worthington header.Leeds' second goal came in twenty-four minutes. Thomas cut the ball back from the right touchline and Terry Connor hit a powerful drive past Sproat. Motherwell looked a little better at the start of the second half, but Leeds were the more direct side. Sproat saved well from a Burns header before Terry Connor added a third goal in the sixty-third minute. Motherwell's night of misery was completed when Worthington scored their fourth and his second goal with four minutes remaining.

Jock's boys are starstruck

Jock Wallace couldn't have been too impressed by the performance of his men at Fir Park last night. Motherwell with George Best making a star appearance, were upstaged even before the curtain came down for the interval. By then Leeds, with several internationals in their line-up, had taken a two goal lead. The opener came in fourteen minutes, courtesy of that other experienced campaigner, Frank Worthington. Thomas chipped into the box and the ex-England star headed out of Hugh Spropat's reach from eight yards. Motherwell came close to an equaliser when a Willie Irvine header flew over the bar. But Leeds went further ahead in twenty-four minutes. Thomas cut the ball back from the right and Terry Connor fired a powerful shot into the net. Connor scored his second-and Leeds' third-goal in sixty-three minutes. And nine minutes later the show was over for Best when he was replaced by Bruce Clelland. Worthington grabbed his double by netting Number four with four minutes remaining.
